10 great Aussie pubs worth spending the night in

By Julie Miller

There’s something comforting about a good old Aussie pub – not only are they a great place to meet and mingle with locals, but they also offer an authentic slice of history, with the tall stories and booze-soaked antics etched into their very walls (not to mention the carpet). These days, however, a pub stay isn’t just about finding the cheapest option available – many now offer stylish accommodation, as well as great food and atmosphere. Here are 10 great pubs where you can lay your head after a night at the bar.

The historic stables at Sir George now sport opulent guest rooms.

It may be an historic pub, but the Sir George is so much more, its meticulous renovation in 2016 creating a destination experience in a tiny country town halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. Eight brand new barn-style lofts have been built out the back of the main complex, while the stables dating to 1845 now sport three opulent guest rooms that champion the original stonework. In the main building, there’s a front bar, an award-winning restaurant serving seasonal produce, a downstairs cellar that doubles as a function space, a dedicated whisky lounge, and an artisan bakery where the aroma of freshly baked sourdough wafts through the air. From $435. See sirgeorge.com.au

Large, contemporary artworks form the centrepiece of each refurbished guest room, with touches such as quality linen, black and white ensuites, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and complimentary toiletries elevating the guest experience. There’s no on-site parking, but the pub is in walking distance of Town Hall station as well as all the city attractions. Rates from $151 a night, see criterionhotel.net.au
