Newcastle fillies set for interesting showdown at Gunnedah meeting

Rival Newcastle fillies Scholl Deep and She’s Got Teeth are set to stage a two-horse war at Tuesday’s Gunnedah meeting.

And it might evolve into a classic betting showdown between a pair of three-year-olds who are out to use the meeting as a springboard into bigger early spring targets.

Scholl Deep, a daughter of group 1 Doncaster Hcp winner Kermadec and trained by David Atkins, was edging early favouritism in the Maiden Plate over 1250m.

After three early winter trials, Scholl Deep served notice on debut in a more than handy 1200m Newcastle maiden three weeks ago fighting hard late to be beaten only a long neck.

And right behind her on the line was the Kris Lees-trained She’s Got Teeth who made up a stack of ground coming from last in her first run for 15 weeks.

The daughter of Holler - winner of the group 1 Canterbury Stakes in 2016 - had shown glimpses of ability across three country runs as a two-year-old to start her career.

But it was that first run back as a three-year-old that signalled the best is yet to come.

There certainly won’t be much between them at post time, a little extra ground must suit She’s Got Teeth, but on the smaller turning Gunnedah circuit, Scholl Deep should find a commanding position closer to the speed, and is likely to maintain favouritism.
