Relive every shot: How the penalty shootout between the Matildas and France played out

With scores tied at 0-0 after extra time in their quarter-final, the Matildas and France began what would become the longest shootout in Women’s World Cup history.
The goalkeepers were Mackenzie Arnold, who’d already stood firm for Australia through 120 minutes, and Solene Durand, who was subbed into the game by France in the last minutes of extra time specifically for the shootout.

Here is how each shot happened:
1. Selma Bacha (France): Shoots low to the left and Arnold’s saves it. 0-0.

2. Caitlin Foord (Australia): Stuttering run up, then powerful low shot into bottom-left corner. Australia lead 0-1.
3. Kadidiatou Diani (France): Poised run up, hits it into the bottom-left corner, almost a copy of Foord’s penalty. 1-1.

4. Steph Catley (Australia): Steps into her shot and hits a slightly raised shot to the left, comfortably saved by Durand. 1-1.
5. Wendie Renard (France): Shapes to shoot to the right, then swivels her hips at the last moment and nails it next to the left post. France lead 2-1.

6. Sam Kerr (Australia): Runs in straight and passes it low to the right, just past the hand of Durand. 2-2.
7. Eugenie Le Sommer (France): So calm. Runs in from the left, shapes to kick that way but powers it low to the right. Arnold stands no chance. France lead 3-2.
8. Mary Fowler (Australia): Runs in from the left, hints she is kicking right but swings powerfully and hits it low into the left corner. 3-3.
9. Eve Perisset (France): Subbed in late in extra time. Always going to her left and Arnold reads her like a book. The Aussie keeper makes a diving save, tipping the shot against the post. 3-3.
10. Mackenzie Arnold (Australia): First chance to win the match. She hits it towards the top-right corner. Durand has no chance until it cannons off the post. Soon after Arnold swirls her finger in a circle towards the bench. Time to mentally reset. We’re all tied up at 3-3.

11. Grace Geyoro (France): Stop-start run up then hits it low and powerfully to the left. Arnold picks the correct side and gets a glove to it, but the ball still goes in. France lead 4-3.
12. Katrina Gorry (Australia): Hits it powerfully and low to the left. Durand picks correctly and gets a glove to it, but it goes just inside the post. 4-4.

13. Sakina Karchaoui (France): Crushes her shot high and to the right. It just tickles the underside of the crossbar and falls in. France lead 5-4.
14. Tameka Yallop (Australia): Takes a moment, stutters her run up and Durand dives first. Yallop just has to tap it low to the right. 5-5.

15. Maelle Lakrar (France): Runs straight down the middle. Arnold dives early to the left and Lakrar eases it into the right of goal. France lead 6-5.
16. Ellie Carpenter (Australia): Only takes a few steps in and hits the ball hard for the left, slamming her shot into the inside of the left post. 6-6.

17a. Kenza Dali (France): A hard strike to the right of goal requires a super save from Arnold. Dali drops to her knees. But video review determines the Aussie keeper left her line early, so a retake is ordered.
17b. Kenza Dali (France): Dali steps to her left and hits a raised shot to her right. Arnold mirrors her movements and gets a full hand to the ball before staring down the referee to make sure it was legal. 6-6.

18. Clare Hunt (Australia): The Matildas’ second chance to win the match. Hunt aims for a raised shot left of the middle. Durand dives the wrong way but gets her left hand up in time to stop it. That is a world-class save. 6-6.

19. Vicki Becho (France): The 19-year-old star sends Arnold the wrong way but smashes her kick into the left post. She can’t believe it. Arnold sighs relief. 6-6.
20. Cortnee Vine (Australia): Only needs a couple of steps and taps it to the right side, just past Durand’s glove. She knows immediately she’s put it home and put her team into a historic semi-final. Australia win 7-6.
