Six of the best Sydney houses on the market

Frankly, we don’t think we’ve seen a place quite as adorable as this waterfront Palm Beach beauty all year. While sprawling coastal casas with all the bells and whistles are undeniably spectacular, there’s something elementally perfect about a simple home by the blue.

Sitting right on the Pittwater, 887 Barrenjoey Road is a classic beach house – a relaxed, rejuvenating decompression chamber for the soul. LJ Hooker’s B. J. Edwards says it’s the kind of property where “You open the door and it’s just, ‘Wow!’ That sparkling blue-water view is right there.”

The rangy open-plan house consists of a neat kitchen and warm dining area with a lovely old brick fireplace. The living area takes the lion’s share of the languid space. Glass stackers open onto a sublime, broad deck with automated awnings so you can watch the world float by, rain or shine.

There are two bedrooms here and, below, a separate self-contained studio that could be guest space or a holiday-let opportunity. The gorgeous grounds roll right down to the water, and there’s ample room to set yourself up in the terraced green garden. Bliss.

6 Springdale Road Killara

Originally designed by one of Australia’s most famed architects, Ken Woolley, today this masterful home is a feast for the eye, with angles, textures and light all at play.

“The home offers sumptuous new interiors throughout, multiple internal and external entertaining spaces, detailed custom joinery, plus a pool and tennis court in a north-to-rear private backyard,” the agent says.

“As with many modernist homes, soaring ceilings, exposed brick and geometry interact to give the place scale, soul and warmth.”

10 Norwood Avenue Lindfield

Nestled within a tree-lined blue-ribbon street, this architect-designed family oasis unfolds across two lavish levels, brimming with space, style and serenity.

“The living area is soaked in sunlight and flows seamlessly to the al fresco area,” the agent says. “This then extends to a large and level garden, made blissfully private by immaculate hedges, complete with a resort-style saltwater pool.”

1 The Serpentine Bilgola Beach

Picture residing mere footsteps from Bilgola Beach in this sun-kissed gem, dazzling with coastal charm and a touch of Palm Springs flair.

“This marks the first time our home has been listed in over 45 years,” says the seller, Jan Hayes. “[It’s] much cherished for its open plan, single-level design, spilling out to the outdoors. The north-facing sandstone paving area by the pool is a sun-trap in the mornings, with the sound of the beach ever present.”

66 Shadforth Street Mosman

Built in c1905, this Federation home is charming from the get-go, with its nostalgia-filled facade and lovely hallway with original arches, high ceilings and skylights.

“Renovations and an extension have welcomed open, spacious and sunlit living areas while retaining its heritage features,” says the seller, Shirley Beaumont Owles. “The whole house is a delight, specifically the sunny travertine-paved courtyard for relaxing and entertaining.”

4 Hartley Street Rozelle

Unique for the area, given its land size and dual street access, this luxurious all-rounder caters to a family’s ever-changing needs.

“The backyard, framed by landscaped gardens, welcomes daily visits from the rosella birds,” the agent says. “[It’s] adorned with two private al fresco settings. There’s also a studio above the garage that presents a very flexible space, be it a home office, gym or guest quarters.”
